Do I need to obtain a representative (attorney) to help with my appeal?
Question
Do I need to obtain a representative (attorney) to help with my appeal?
Answer
Many people handle their own appeals, but they can choose an attorney or non-attorney to help them. The decision whether or not to seek the services of a representative (attorney or other qualified person) is yours to make. A representative who is familiar with the Social Security system may provide valuable service to you, but you can process your appeal without representation. For additional information, see our publication Your Right to Representation (Publication No. 05-10075), either by contacting your local Social Security office, calling our toll-free number (1-800-772-1213), or by clicking on the above title.
