Do SSI beneficiaries have to inform SSA of changes in living arrangements?
  Question
My dad, who is receiving SSI benefits, will be coming to live with me. Since his SSI check goes directly to the bank, does he have to report the move to Social Security?
  Answer

Yes. An SSI beneficiary must report any change in living arrangements within 10 days after the month the change occurs. If the change is not reported, the beneficiary could receive an incorrect payment and have to pay it back, or may not receive all the money due. Failure to report a change to Social Security could result in a penalty being deducted from SSI benefits. Also, the beneficiary  needs to report the new address to Social Security  to receive mail from us when necessary. You can report the change by mail or in person at any Social Security office. Social Security's toll-free number is 1-800-772-1213. People who are deaf or hard of hearing may call our toll-free TTY number, 1-800-325-0778, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Monday through Friday.

You may also wish to read our material on "reporting responsibilities" in the booklet, "Understanding SSI" and in the SSI Spotlight on Rights and Responsibilities.
