There are many resources that provide critical information on homelessness, persons who are homeless, and strategies for ending homelessness.

How many people are homeless? Why?  Over a five-year period, about 2–3 percent of the U.S. population (5–8 million people) will experience at least one night of homelessness.

SAMHSA's National Mental Health Information Center offers overviews of evaluations and analyses of homeless programs and services, as well as information on persons who are homeless.

The National Resource Center on Homelessness and Mental Illness offers a wide array of information on homeless issues, including publications and access to other descriptive and analytic studies of homelessness and persons who are homeless.

The US Census Bureau’s National Survey of Homeless Assistance Providers and Clients (NSHAPC) was conducted to provide updated information on homeless assistance programs and the clients who use them to federal agencies responsible for administering homeless assistance programs and to other interested parties. They also produced downloadable data files for public use based on the survey data.

The Urban Institute has prepared a manuscript on What Will It Take To End Homelessness? This publication features statistics on homelessness and ways to end homelessness in the United States.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors has produced a survey of 28 major cities on their conditions of hunger and homelessness.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers information and many helpful web links on disease prevention among persons who are homeless, including youth who are homeless, through their CDC National Prevention Information Network (NPIN).

NHSDA/NSDUH National Survey on Drug Use and Health Statistics This survey is the primary source of information on the prevalence, patterns, and consequences of drug and alcohol use and abuse in the general U.S. civilian non-institutionalized population, age 12 and older.
