RATIONALE: Exposure to low-level benzene in the work place may affect the risk of developing cancer later in life. Learning about the long-term effects of benzene exposure may help the study of cancer and related disorders in the future.
PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying benzene exposure as a risk factor for hematological cancer or related disorders or lung cancer in Chinese workers.

Official Title: | A Case-Cohort Study of Hematopoietic Malignancies and Related Disorders and Lung Cancer in Benzene-Exposed Workers in China |
Estimated Enrollment: | 3860 |
OBJECTIVES:
OUTLINE: Participants complete questionnaires to collect information on potential confounders to the analysis of benzene's effects and information on work experience outside of the study cohort factories.
Patients undergo buccal cell and blood sample collection periodically for biological studies. Samples are analyzed for genetic polymorphisms potentially associated with benzene metabolism and disease status via polymorphism analysis.
