FAQ

Must a transportation agency use one of the specific devices accepted by the Federal Highway Administration as meeting NCHRP Report 350 evaluation criteria?

A transportation agency must use Report 350 hardware in general when it is installed on the National Highway System, but it is up to each agency to determine which Report 350 products it will actually use. Many State DOT's have "new products" committees which decide what devices will be added to their acceptable products listing. While satisfactory crash performance is a "given", factors such as cost, maintainability, and compatability with existing hardware usually determine whether or not a product will be accepted for use by a State DOT.
