DAYTON, N.J. -- Reducing the chance of fatalities and injuries during construction of the data center on Ridge Road in Dayton, N.J., is at the heart of a new partnership formed by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Structure Tone Inc., the Middlesex County Building and Construction Trades Council, and the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development. The partnership was officially launched today during a signing ceremony at the worksite. OSHA's Strategic Partnerships for Worker Safety and Health are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative relationships with groups including trade associations, labor organizations and employers. Scheduled to be completed by June 2007, the data center will house a computer facility, printing facility, electrical shop, warehouse, conference area and offices. During construction, the project will involve 25 to 30 contractors and as many as 400 workers from various trades. "With so many contractors involved in this project, it is important that there be a coordinated safety and health program to protect the workers on the site," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator in New York. Under the agreement, Structure Tone, the project construction manager, will work with OSHA to establish and enforce a comprehensive safety and health management system for use by all contractors on the jobsite. The primary goals of the partnership are to eliminate fatalities during construction of the data center, attain a project injury and illness rate 25 percent below the industry average and reduce workers compensation costs. Since its Strategic Partnership Program began in 1998, OSHA has formed more than 375 partnerships, impacting almost 13,000 employers and more than 870,000 workers across the United States.
