Goal Is To Reduce Fatalities, Injuries and Illnesses OMAHA, Neb. -- Ensuring safety and health for employees in the concrete industry is the goal of a new partnership between the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Nebraska Concrete and Aggregates Association, Nebraska Workforce Development and the Nebraska Safety Council. A signing ceremony will be held Thursday, Sept. 29. OSHA Strategic Partnerships for Worker Safety and Health are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative relationships with groups including trade associations, labor organizations and employers. The partnership, the first with the concrete industry within the four-state Midwest region, will boost access to top quality safety training resources for participating firms and their employees. "With the Nebraska Concrete and Aggregates Association representing about 90 percent of the industry in the state, this partnership will be an important training vehicle to enhance safety and health for workers in the concrete industry," said Charles E. Adkins, CIH, OSHA's regional administrator in Kansas City. The primary goal of the Nebraska Concrete Partnership is to reduce by three percent annually the number of injuries, illnesses and fatalities affecting participant members, with an emphasis on confined spaces, silica dust, noise, falls between working surfaces, slips, trips, falls to the same surface and electrical hazards. Other goals include increasing the number of association members that implement effective safety and health programs; reducing worker compensation costs and OSHA penalties for member participants; and removing employees from exposure to the targeted hazards. The partnership also provides parties an opportunity to participate in a voluntary, cooperative relationship with OSHA for training and education, outreach and communication, and promoting a national dialogue on workplace safety and health. Since its Strategic Partnership Program began in 1998, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has formed more than 300 partnerships, impacting over 13,000 employers and 573,000 employees across the United States.
