NEW YORK -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has recognized Presbyterian Home for Central New York in New Hartford for high achievement in employee safety and health. A skilled nursing facility that employs 370 workers, Presbyterian has been designated as a "Merit" site in OSHA's prestigious Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). "Merit" sites meet all of the VPP minimum requirements and most safety and health elements for the program, which far exceed minimum OSHA standards. The New Hartford facility now joins an elite corps of about 1,250 workplaces nationwide that have earned VPP recognition. "This award highlights Presbyterian's ongoing commitment to workplace safety and health," said Chris Adams, area director of OSHA's Syracuse area office who presented a VPP flag and plaque to the company in a recent ceremony. "Of special note is its exemplary, proactive approach to reducing the hazards of violence against employees." Presbyterian has established guidelines in managing and reducing the potential for violence from residents against staff. The program elements include pre-admission assessment and evaluation of residents; ongoing evaluation of communication, staff education and training; evaluation of residents' behaviors, interventions and care planning; coping strategies to minimize incidents; and post-incident followup. VPP offers employers an opportunity to move beyond traditional safety programs by recognizing participants that successfully incorporate comprehensive safety and health programs into their total management systems. The VPP programs are open to deserving employers in any industry. Requirements for application to VPP include a high degree of management support and employee involvement; a high-quality worksite hazard analysis; prevention and control programs; and comprehensive safety and health training for all employees. Each of these elements must be effective, in place and in operation for at least one year before a company can apply to join the program.
