George Jackson Brigade

The George Jackson Brigade, a Seattle based revolutionary group, claimed credit for bank robberies, bombings, attacks against custom houses, court houses, Safeway stores, public utilities and correction facilities. The group was named after George Jackson, a dissident prisoner at Soledad Prison, who was a writer. While incarcerated at San Quentin Prison, during a violent prison riot and attempted prison break, Jackson ran into the prison yard and was shot and killed by a guard on August 11, 1971. The group was involved in violent acts and claimed to use force to overthrow the United States Government or the government of the State of Washington. In various communiques, the group tried to justify their various acts of violence by stating they were done to further the ends of a revolution of the "masses" to overthrow the present governmental and international business structures and to establish a system of communism. This group was eventually captured or killed and all of them sentenced to jail. One member died during an arrest attempt.
