WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has certified High Steel Structures Inc.'s Plant #3 of Williamsport as a “star,” or highest level, site in its Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). During a recent ceremony, Marie A. Cassady, OSHA's acting regional administrator in Philadelphia, presented the company with a VPP star flag. High Steel Structures Williamsport is a heavy steel fabrication shop supplying steel girders and concrete pre-cast products to the highway construction market. The facility employs 133 people and was recognized for having an injury and illness rate that is 38 percent below the industry average. More than 1,860 worksites nationwide have earned entry into OSHA's VPP. Requirements include a high degree of management support and employee involvement, a high quality worksite hazard analysis, prevention and control programs, and comprehensive safety and health training for all employees. Each of these elements must be effective, in place and in operation for at least one year before a company can apply to join the VPP. OSHA's VPP has proven over the years to be an effective means of reducing injuries, illnesses, fatalities and costs, while fostering a more productive workforce and increasing employee morale. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
