OSHA SEEKING NOMINATIONS FOR MACOSH

Washington -- Nominations are being accepted for persons to serve on the Maritime Advisory Committee for Occupational Safety and Health (MACOSH), based on Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao's decision to reestablish the charter of the committee, OSHA announced today.

MACOSH members advise the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health on issues and concerns relating to occupational safety and health for workers involved in the shipbuilding, shipbreaking, ship repair, and longshoring in the maritime industries.

The committee will consist of at least 12 members. The committee will be diverse and balanced, both in terms of segments of the maritime industry represented (e.g., shipyard and longshoring industries), and in the views or interests represented by the members (employer, employee, safety and health professional organizations, government organizations with interests or activities related to the maritime industry, academia, and the public).

Interested persons may nominate themselves or others for membership on the committee. OSHA encourages the nomination of a broad range of individuals as possible committee members. Details for the nomination procedure appear in the June 21, 2002
Federal Register.

Nominations must be received by August 5, 2002. Because of security-related problems in receiving regular mail service in a timely manner, OSHA requests that nominations be hand-delivered to the Docket Office, or sent by Express Mail or other overnight delivery service, electronic mail, or facsimile. Nominations may be hand-delivered or sent by Express Mail or other overnight delivery service, to: U.S. Department of Labor, OSHA Docket Office, Docket MACOSH 2002-2, Room N-2625, 200 Constitution Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20210. Nominations may be sent electronically from the OSHA website at http://ecomments.osha.gov or by fax to the OSHA Docket Office at (202) 693-1648.

The previous charter for MACOSH expired on March 10, 2002.
