MIDLAND, Texas -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has formed an alliance with the Hispanic Association of Safety Professionals (HASP), Midland, to further the safety and health of Hispanic employees working in the construction and oil and gas industries in west Texas. OSHA health and safety alliances are part of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations and employers. "This alliance will provide opportunities to build trust, provide information about best practices and leverage resources to maximize worker safety," said John Miles, OSHA's regional administrator in Dallas and head of the agency's taskforce to foster job safety and health among Hispanic workers. Alliances enable organizations to collaborate with OSHA to prevent injuries and illnesses in the workplace. They help participating organizations network with others committed to safety and health and exchange information about best practices for addressing hazards such as preventing falls and electrocutions. Current membership of HASP, which represents various construction and oil and gas companies in the Midland-Odessa area, has a direct impact on about 10,000 employees in west Texas. HASP safety managers and consultants, with experience in various safety and health disciplines, will volunteer their time to teach construction industry-related safety and health courses in Spanish.
