OSHA Recognizes PPL Electric Utilities-East Region
for Safety and Health Achievement
No Lost-Time Injuries in 10 Years at Scranton & Pocono Site

SCRANTON, Pa. -- PPL Electric Utilities-East Region has earned membership in the prestigious "Star" Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

"PPL Corporation has done an excellent job of safety and health management," said Philadelphia OSHA Regional Administrator Richard Soltan. "They should be commended for their commitment to their employees' safety, which sets a standard for other companies in their industry."

The main function of the Scranton and Pocono site is the transmission and delivery of electric service, including design, construction, operation and maintenance of electric transmission, distribution and substation facilities. The site employs 342 workers and has not had a lost- time injury in ten years.

To date, PPL has six VPP power generation sites and seven VPP transmission and distribution sites in Pa.

OSHA's Voluntary Protection Programs are designed for worksites with comprehensive, successful safety and health programs. They are open to workplaces in any industry and to companies with injury rates below their industry's national average. VPP is OSHA's premier program to promote and recognize effective employer safety and health management.

Information kits about the application and approval process are available from the VPP manager at the OSHA regional office in Philadelphia at (215) 861-4900.

Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. The role of OSHA is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards, providing training, outreach and education, establishing partnerships and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
