Mortality Among Workers at the Savannah River Nuclear Fuels Production Facility
Since 1952 the Savannah River Site (SRS), located in Aiken, South Carolina, has operated as a Department of Energy (DOE) production facility for
nuclear fuels and other materials. A previous study through 1980 of 9,860 white males employed at least 90 consecutive days at the SRS between 1952
and 1974 found an increased number of leukemia deaths among hourly employees compared to expected numbers from the U.S. white males (13 observed
versus 7.95 expected). The current investigation of the same cohort included six additional years of follow-up and radiation dosimetry data for 99%
of the cohort.
