Success in these and other areas critical to the U.S. economy depends upon accurate measurements of an array of physical quantities. The Physics Laboratory, a world-class national research laboratory, is one of seven Measurement and Standards Laboratories at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Boulder, Colorado. Together, they are the nation's resource for the standards, measurements, data, and calibrations that help U.S. companies from microelectronics to medical equipment makers excel in our global economy.

The Physics Laboratory is a vital component of the nation's technology infrastructure, providing highly specialized services that support innovation and industrial progress. With an annual budget of about $50 million and a staff of 260 people, the Laboratory is solving measurement challenges for U.S. industry, academia, and other government agencies, ultimately making a difference in our global competitiveness.
