Take Plain-Language Training

Plain-language training is available in many forms—ranging from traditional instructor-led training to correspondence courses and computer-based training. This page provides links to some of the plain language training resources we have found. If you know of training resources that we have overlooked, please contact us.

We provide a free half-day introduction to plain language to federal agencies. You must have at least 30 participants and pay the trainer's expenses. Ask us if one of our experienced trainers is available for your agency. Contact us.

Free online training

The Department of the Army made this training module Adobe Acrobat Reader icon, intended for "Action Officers" (staff officers), available to us.

NIH offers a free plain language internet-based training course. Most of the examples relate to medical writing.

The Plain Train external link icon website offers free online training to individuals.

Other online training

The Plain English Campaign's internet-based training course external link icon offers online training to individuals. There is a charge for this course.

The Word Centre offers a computer-based teach-yourself course external link icon for individuals. There is a charge for this course.

Other training

Editor Software external link icon offers a computer-based training program in plain language writing style for individuals or entire agencies. There is a charge for this program, but you can download a trial version that works for 10 hours.

The government of Mexico kicked off a program in 2004 encouraging plain language in government writing. You can download this compressed file of the materials they prepared for the participants. This material is in Spanish.
