Bites and stings cause about 100 deaths/year in the US, and > 90,000 are reported annually to poison control centers; many more occur that are not reported. All patients with bites and stings should receive appropriate tetanus prophylaxis (see Table 1: Anaerobic Bacteria: Guidelines for Tetanus Immunization).
