On July 8, 2005, the NASA Office of Education, Informal Education Division, released an internal funding opportunity inviting NASA field centers and the Jet Propulsion Lab to submit proposals for FY05 NASA Explorer Institutes projects. All NEI projects selected for funding will be conducted in partnership with members of the informal education community.
Four categories of NEI projects were outlined in the FY05 solicitation:
- Professional Development Workshop Opportunities.
- Science, Technology, Engineering and MathematicsTeaching Tools and Products.
- Infrastructure Development Projects.
- Partnerships for Sustainability.
These categories were identified as the highest areas of need by approximately 500 members of the informal education community who participated in FY 2004 NEI workshops and focus groups, and the NEI Planning and Evaluation Meeting in March 2005. The input NASA received from internal partners and members of the informal education community is detailed in the NEI Report that was released in July 2005.
Ten NEI proposals from seven different NASA field centers were selected for funding. The selected NEI projects collectively target large segments of the informal education community and extend across the country. The proposed content engages the American public in Earth and space science, lunar exploration, and/or space operations topics. All four of the categories outlined above are addressed by the selected NEI projects.
