I applied for a Social Security card today. What do I tell my employer?
  Question

I just received a work authorization card from Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and I applied for a Social Security card today. What do I tell my employer?

  Answer
If you ask, you can get a receipt from Social Security at the time you apply for a card then show it to your employer as proof. If you didn’t get a receipt, your employer may ask for identifying information such as your name, address, date of birth, sex and parents' name.  Also, be prepared to show your employer your work authorization card from DHS and any other documents you have establishing your identity and eligibility to work.

Once you receive your card, immediately tell your employer your correct Social Security number. It is your employer's responsibility to correctly record your number on their payroll records.
