The first meeting of the Federal Executive Steering Committee on Mental Health convened at the end of January. A. Kathryn Power, M.Ed., Director of SAMHSA's Center for Mental Health Services; SAMHSA Administrator Charles G. Curie, M.A., A.C.S.W.; and Mark B. McClellan, M.D., Ph.D., Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, joined committee members from other Federal agencies in discussions.

The committee will oversee the implementation of action items across Federal agencies as outlined in SAMHSA's Transforming Mental Health Care in America-The Federal Action Agenda: First Steps, released in July 2005. SAMHSA's Action Agenda was informed by recommendations from the President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health.

The committee will provide general direction, monitor, and report on the Federal Government's progress. The next meeting will be held in July 2006.
