The Sierra Interagency Black Bear Group

This website is brought to you by the Sierra Interagency Black Bear Group (SIBBG). This work group is comprised of wildlife biologists, recreation managers, and wilderness managers from the national parks and national forests of the Sierra Nevada.

The SIBBG was created to share information, techniques, and ideas; to coordinate policies and information; to eliminate political barriers to progress - all with the ultimate goal of preserving a healthy black bear population free of human influences on a regional-scale. Towards meeting this goal, all three agencies agree:

  • To adopt uniform testing standards and approval protocols for SIBBG approved bear-resistant food storage containers.
  • To consult the other parties on any proposed or approved visitor use restriction that has the intention or possibility of affecting bear management, visitor use, and other neighboring land management agencies and private property.
  • To the extent possible, to adopt rules, restrictions, and policies on an ecological scale.
  • To improve visitor information across boundaries through the coordination of a web page, waysides, and visitor signs.
  • To share training opportunities.

The goal of the National Park Service is to restore and perpetuate the natural distribution, ecology, and behavior of black bears free of human influences.

The goal of the Forest Service is to care for the land and serve the people and to maintain a wild black bear population under the advisory of the California Department of Fish and Game.
