Riparian ecosystems comprise less than three percent of the Utah land surface but support the highest diversity and density of birds of any habitat type in the State. The Jordan River was historically an important migratory route and breeding location for neotropical migratory songbirds and other avian species.  A number of bird species that are common in the riparian areas throughout Utah are now rare or absent on the Jordan River. Over the years pollution, channelization, dredging, grazing, and urban encroachment have altered the once rich riparian habitats.  Only a few high quality wetland and riparian areas remain within this river corridor.  Using natural resource damage settlement funds received from the Sharon Steel Superfund Site, the chance to restore and protect over 270 acres along the Jordan River is now possible.
