North Texas RCFL
This RCFL began
operations in 2001 and continues to positively impact the North Texas
region where it is based. The RCFL mostly supports investigations into
child pornography, computer intrusion and financial fraud. Highlights
of past successes include:
Sexual Assault Against a Minor
A 15-year-old female student accused a teacher with the Plano
Independent School District of sexual assault. Detectives were
concerned that there may have been other victims, but all of the other
potential victims denied any involvement with the teacher. The mother
of one of the victims consented to a search of a computer used by her
daughter. Through recovered deleted emails, the detectives learned
that there were other victims and once they reviewed the email message,
they admitted that the subject had victimized them.
Check Writing Software Scam
A suspect used a graphic software package to create checks drawn on
a closed account by using a false name and presented them to retailers
for large purchases. After making all of his purchases, the subjected
deleted his "art work" from the computer. An RCFL examiner retrieved
the deleted checks and, based on this development, the subject pleaded
guilty.
Reclaimed Data from Melted Computer Terminal
A suspect rang the doorbell of his victim, fatally shot them five
times in the face, and then set a computer in the victim's house on
fire. After the fire department put out the blaze, the Dallas Police
Department brought the smoldering mound of plastic that was once a
computer in for examination. After removing the computer's hard
drive, drying and cleaning it, the RCFL examiners retrieved pictures
and correspondence off of the hard drive.
