Technology Forum 2006

The GMR Technology Forum was held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Midwest Chapter of the Medical Library Association in Louisville, KY on October 10, 2006.

The first part of the program was a discussion of exciting new technologies that one could use in the library and one's professional life.

  • Bryan S. Vogh, Technology Coordinator, NN/LM GMR spoke about del.icio.us and wikis.
  • Max Anderson, Educational Services Librarian, SOLINET spoke about podcasting.
  • Dale Prince, Technology Coordinator, NN/LM SE/A spoke about Web 2.0.

The speakers reviewed opportunities for use of these technologies, learning curves and pitfalls to avoid. The second part of the program was an open forum with technological questions taken from the audience and answered by the panel.

Max Anderson, MLIS earned his MLIS in 1999 from Florida State University. He worked as a Public Access Computer Trainer for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, delivering training and installing computers in rural libraries across the country. While there, Max became involved with the creation of what became WebJunction, an online portal for libraries. Since 2003, he has worked at SOLINET as an Educational Services Instructor. He writes and teaches classes on various OCLC services, web design, and general technology to librarians. Some of his interests include RFID, HTML, Internet Filtering, cataloging, and advocacy and support for libraries.

J. Dale Prince, MA, MLS, AHIP, is Technology Coordinator for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Southeastern Atlantic Region located at the Human Services Library of the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Dale provides Internet and technology instruction to medical librarians and health professionals within the region, as well as training and outreach for a variety of NLM programs and services. He received his Master of Library Science from Indiana University, is a member of Beta Phi Mu and is a member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals.
