Community Resources: Pedestrian Safety

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY PROGRAM PLANNING RESOURCES

This 1998 "best practices" report developed for the FHWA by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals showcases bicycle and pedestrian plans and facilities that have been recognized for excellence.

The U.S. site for the International Walk to School Week and for promoting safe walking and bicycling to school throughout the year.

The Department of Health and Human Services' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed the Kids Walk-to-School program to increase opportunities for daily physical activity by encouraging children to walk to and from school in groups accompanied by adults. Resources [link to http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/kidswalk/resources.htm] include presentation materials; train-the-trainer programs; fact sheet; brochure; guidance for program development; promotional graphics; and other resources.

American Council for the Blind's handbook for improving the pedestrian environment.

Safe Routes to School Programs look different from community to community. Yet they all share the common goal of improving the health of kids and the community by making walking and bicycling to school safer, easier, and more enjoyable. California's Safe Routes to School Program is one example.
