Examining Crashes, Injuries and Cost

Examining Crashes

When conducting analyses of pedestrian crashes; engineers, planners and safety practitioners may want further guidance on which pedestrian measures are appropriate to address types of pedestrian crashes. The Engineering Solutions section provides detailed information intended to give general guidance on possible measures to consider when trying to reduce a pattern of pedestrian crashes at a location or roadway section.

  • Pedestrian Crash Data [HTML, PDF 59KB] - Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
  • Case Study: A Study of Fatal Pedestrian Crashes in Florida [PDF, 39KB]
  • Pedestrian Accidents with Left-Turning Traffic at Signalized Intersections [PDF, 88KB] - This paper examines pedestrian accidents with left-turning traffic at signalized intersections. More specifically, this paper reviews the literature on pedestrians and drivers with an emphasis on human factors.
  • Crash-Type Manual for Pedestrians [PDF, 5.5MB] - This guide is a result of FHWA research study that applied the basic NHTSA bicycle and pedestrian typologies to a sample of bicycle- and pedestrian-motor vehicle crashes from the six States with the purpose of refining and updating the crash type distributions.
  • Selecting Pedestrian Safety Improvements - The Crash Group/General Countermeasure Matrix identifies potential solutions for use by safety practitioners. This matrix is particularly helpful as a resource of potential engineering countermeasures, which may be implemented at a location to address a particular pedestrian crash type.
  • Pedestrian Facilities Users' Guide - The guide contains useful information regarding how to create walking environments, the main causes of pedestrian crashes and ways to counter them, and engineering improvements that can be made to improve the quality of life for all citizens."

Examining Injuries

  • Police-Reporting of Pedestrians and Bicyclists Treated in Hospital Emergency Rooms [PDF, 37KB] - This paper reports on analysis of factors associated with the occurance of a match between the emergency room reported cases and state motor vehicle crash data. The purpose of this paper is to provide additional information on the likely level of underreporting of pedestrian- and bicycle-motor vehicle collisions on state crash files and to examine whether the reported cases differ in any systematic ways from those cases that were not reported. University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center.
  • Injuries to Pedestrians and Bicyclists: An Analysis Based on Hospital Emergency Department Data [PDF, 688KB] - The purpose of this study is to broaden understanding about the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists. FHWA.
  • Blaming Children for Child Pedestrian Injuries [PDF, 35KB] - Case study of a child pedestrian death presented in order to examine the apportionment of responsibility for child pedestrian injuries. Injury Prevention Research Centre, Department of Community Health, University of Auckland, New Zealand.
  • Literature Review on Vehicle Travel Speeds and Pedestrian Injuries [HTML, PDF 432KB] - The relationship between vehicle travel speeds and resulting pedestrian injury was reviewed in the literature and in existing data sets. NHTSA.
