PART D: SCIENCE BASE

Figure D3-2. (A) The Distributions for Weight Gain Over an 8-Year Period, Estimated from the NHANES and CARDIA Studies. (B) A Distribution of the Daily Energy Accumulation on the Adult Population Over the 8-Year Period, Assuming a Linear Accumulation of Body Energy (Hill et al., 2003).

(A) The weight gain distributions using both the NHANES and CARDIA data are plotted on a graph where the x axis represents “weight change in lbs in 8 years” and the y axis represents the proportion of survey participants. The distribution curve for NHANES data goes from approximately 20 lbs lost to approximately 80 lbs gained, peaking at approximately 15 to 20 lbs gained. The distribution curve for the CARDIA data goes from approximately 40 lbs lost to approximately 80 lbs gained, peaking at approximately 20 lbs gained.

(B) Excess energy stored in kcal/day is shown on the x axis of this graph, and the proportion of the study population is represented on the y axis. The distribution of excess kcal/day ranges from approximately negative 25 kcal to approximately 100 kcal. The median of the population is at 15 kcal/day excess energy stored. At the 90th percentile, the excess energy stored is 50 kcal/day.
