Methods Used to Identify Guidelines for Consideration
The National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC) uses a range of methods to
identify and collect the most comprehensive set of guidelines for consideration
against its inclusion criteria. These include:
- Publishing a notice in the
Federal Register*
inviting guideline developers to submit their guidelines for consideration;
(*Adobe Acrobat Reader
is required to view document.)
- Periodic mailings to guideline developers
- Iterative searches of the literature using resources such as:
- the National Library of Medicine's Medline, HealthSTAR, HSRProj, and DIRLINE databases;
- the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL®) database;
- the Institute for Scientific Information's (ISI's) Current Contents-Clinical Medicine database;
- the American Psychological Association's PsycInfo® and PsycLit® databases;
- annual directories such as ECRI's Healthcare Standards Directory
and the American Medical Association's Directory of Clinical Practice Guidelines;
- the World Wide Web
- Hand-searches of primary and secondary literature sources
- Suggestions from NGC users (i.e., suggestions received via e-mail at
info@guideline.gov
or webmanager@guideline.gov)
