Student Loan Repayment Assistance Program
On August 14th the President signed into law the John R. Justice Prosecutors and Defenders Incentive Act as part of the Higher Education Opportunity Act. The new law authorizes a student loan repayment assistance program for eligible prosecutors and defenders. The law provides for the repayment of student loan debt up to $10,000 per year capping the total potential repayment amount at $60,000. While the passage of the law is a significant step forward in alleviating the burden of student loan debt that many prosecutors carry there remains much more work to achieve adequate funding and implementation of the program.

The National District Attorneys Association would like to thank all of its members, board of directors and the National Prosecutor Coordinators Association for all of their assistance in achieving passage of this important legislation.

Representing over a dozen states, the participants had extensive conversation about these policy changes and their far-reaching consequences—both intended and unintended—for law enforcement and prosecutors.
