The Bonneville cutthroat trout is one of 14 subspecies of cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarki native to interior regions of western North America and is found primarily in Utah and parts of Wyoming, Idaho and Nevada in the Bonneville Basin.

Results of a recent status review indicate that viable, self-sustaining Bonneville cutthroat trout populations are well distributed throughout its historic range and are being restored or protected in all currently occupied watersheds.  Based on this review, the Fish and Wildlife Service has determined that the Bonneville cutthroat trout does not warrant listing as a threatened or endangered species under the Endangered Species Act.

On February 7, 2008, the Fish and Wildlife Service initiated a status review of the Bonneville cutthroat trout to determine if the species is warranted for listing under the Endangered Species Act in any significant portion of its range. With the announcement, the Service opened a 60-day public comment period.
