Flood and Debris Flow Safety Awareness Videos

"Danger! Debris Flow" (14:30 TRT)

The danger of flash floods and debris flows in mountain canyons is explored by science and rescue professionals, as the story of John Henderson and his 9-year old son, Matthew, who lost their lives in a flash flood-debris flow in 1994, is recounted by John's sister, Laura Henderson. With an emphasis on scientific principles, a key point of the video is the relationship between brush fires and an increased flash flood-debris flow danger when the rains come. The video is sponsored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, County Office of Education, and County Department of Public Works, with suppport from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, County Fire Department, and numerous other local public safety agencies.

"No Way Out" (Broadcast Edition 26:00 TRT; Classroom Edition 20:00 TRT)

This important flood safety video explores the dangers of fast-moving flood water, especially the runoff that races through urban cement-lined flood control channels. Rescue specialists are interviewed, as gripping news footage of swiftwater rescue incidents visually reinforces the need for caution. The story of 15-year old Adam Bischoff, who lost his life in the flood-swollen Los Angeles River in 1992, is recounted by his sister, Carrie Bischoff.

The broadcast edition is hosted by the Los Angeles City fire Department's Swifwater Rescue Team Coordinator, Ernesto Ojeda, and features the new Los Angeles County multi-agency swiftwater rescue team. Sponsored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, County Office of Education, and County Department of Public Works, with support from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, County Fire Department, Los Angeles City Fire Department, and numerous other local public safety agencies. "No Way Out" is close-captioned, sponsored by the National Captioning Institute.

30-second broadcast quality spots for TV and radio warn the public about the dangers of fast-moving flood waters, including flash floods and debris flows. Sponsored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, County Office of Education, and Coun ty Department of Public Works, with support from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, County Fire Department, Los Angeles City Fire Department, and numerous other local public safety agnecies.

General Information

Videos and PSAs are available on a non-profit, non-revenue generating basis.

Government agencies and civic groups which require multiple copies, master copies of the videos will be provided at-cost or on a loan basis, allowing each agnecy or group to make as many copies of the programs as needed.
