Figure 12-2: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Hydro-Climatic Data Network (HCDN) was compiled in 1988 and included 854 gauges that were active and had at least 36 years of record. Stations that are still active are shown in green. Stations discontinued since 1988 are shown in red. These stations would have at least 50 years of record as of 2002 if they had been kept in operation. The HCDN is a subset of the USGS stream gauge network that includes continuous long-record stations that have relatively accurate records and are relatively free of overt regulation or diversions.
