Salaam Semaan, DrPH
Dr. Semaan reviews and approves the division’s intramural and extramural research and programmatic protocols, grant-related documents, and scientific manuscripts to ensure adherence to scientific and ethical principles, CDC policies and procedures, and federal requirements for the protection of study participants. Dr. Semaan’s primary interests include the science and ethics of HIV and STD prevention. Her research covers different vulnerable populations including women in resource-poor and at-risk communities as well as drug users. Dr. Semaan serves as a peer reviewer for several journals, including the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Sexually Transmitted Infections, Medical Science Monitor, Women and Health, and AIDS and Behavior. Prior to her appointment to DSTDP, Dr. Semaan was a behavioral scientist in the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention at CDC. Dr. Semaan also worked as a senior research associate with Philadelphia Health Management Corporation and as a research associate with the University of Pennsylvania and Albert Einstein Medical Center. In terms of international work, Dr. Semaan served as a primary health care officer with Save the Children Federation, Beirut, Lebanon and as a survey researcher and analyst with the Ministry of Health, Manama, Bahrain. Dr. Semaan received her undergraduate degree and masters in public health from the American University of Beirut and her doctorate in public health from The Johns Hopkins University.
