	2008 Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program The Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program brings talented college seniors and recent graduates to Washington, D.C., where they are placed in congressional offices and learn about health policy issues, with a focus on issues affecting racial and ethnic minorities and underserved communities. Through the nine-week program (May 19-July 26, 2008), Scholars gain knowledge about federal legislative procedure and health policy issues, while further developing their critical thinking and leadership skills. In addition to gaining experience in a congressional office, Scholars participate in seminars and site visits to augment their knowledge of health care issues, and write and present a health policy research memo that addresses a problem of concern to disadvantaged populations. Application deadline is December 14, 2007.
	The Kaiser Media Fellowships in Health 2007 The purpose of the Kaiser Media Fellowship in Health Program, started in 1993, is to help journalists and commentators do the best possible job of keeping the public informed about health issues at this critical time in the evolution of our health care system. The goal of the fellowship is to: (1) Provide a highly flexible range of opportunities tailored to each fellow's interests; (2) Help journalists improve the quality of the work they do; (3) Provide time to research specific topics; and (4) Deepen participants' commitment to becoming specialists in health reporting. Any journalist, editor, or producer specializing in health reporting-or wanting to do so-is eligible, with one main restriction: applicants must be U.S. citizens, or must work for an accredited U.S. media organization. There is no age restriction, but typically fellows are in the early to mid-career range, with at least five years experience as a journalist. The application deadline is March 2, 2007.
	Scholarship Award in Vision and Medicine (SAVM) for High School Students The Scholarship Award in Vision and Medicine (SAVM) is intended for talented, ambitious, and self-motivated graduating high school seniors. A total of 7 scholarships will be awarded. Award amounts range from $1,000 to $2,500. Additionally, the high schools that nominated the recipients of the SAVM scholarships will receive $500 for use in their science departments. The application deadline is April 1, 2007.
	National Black Nurses Scholarship The National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) is committed to excellence in education and conducts continuing education programs for nurses and allied health professionals throughout the year. The association provides annual scholarships for students. Scholarships provide funding for continuing education. The application deadline is April 15, 2007.
	HIVMA Minority Clinical Fellowships The primary objective of the HIV Medicine Association Minority Clinical Fellowship is to enable underrepresented minority post-residency physicians to gain HIV clinical experience and expertise in an HIV clinical setting. The goal of the program is to increase the number of minority physicians with the expertise and the commitment to provide clinical care to HIV positive patients from minority communities. Two Fellowships will be awarded to an African American and Latino applicant—MD or DO—with a demonstrated interest in HIV medicine, who will have completed their residencies prior to the start of the Fellowship, or are in the first five years of medical practice. The application deadline is February 9, 2007.
	Basic Area Health Education Centers Funding To improve the distribution, diversity, and quality of health personnel in the health services delivery system by encouraging the regional organization of health professions schools. The Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) program assists schools in planning, developing and operating area health education centers that will initate educational systems incentives to both attract and retain health care personnel in scarcity areas. The application deadline is January 23, 2007.
	Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students The Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students (SDS) program promotes diversity among health professions students and practitioners by providing scholarships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Eligible health professions and nursing schools apply for grants to make scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds that have financial need for scholarships and are enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, as full-time students at the schools. The application deadline is January 3, 2007.
	Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF) The APIASF has a vision to see that all Asian and Pacific Islander Americans who wish to pursue higher education have that opportunity, regardless of their ethnicity, national origin or financial means. The application deadline is January 12, 2007.
	Minority Health Fellowship Opportunity at Harvard University The Commonwealth Fund / Harvard University Fellowship in Minority Health Policy Supported by The Commonwealth Fund, administered by the Minority Faculty Development Program at Harvard Medical School, this innovative fellowship is designed to prepare physicians, particularly minority physicians, for leadership roles in formulating and implementing public health policy and practice on a national, state, or community level. The application deadline is January 2, 2007.
	The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program This program honors Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate. The creation of this program pays tribute to Senator Goldwater and establishes in his name an endowed recognition program to foster and encourage excellence in science and mathematics. The application deadline is February 1, 2007.
