Department Of Labor Award Presented For Support Of Government Employee Safety And Health BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The U. S. Labor Department has honored a local volunteer group whose mission is to help the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) provide safety and health protection to government employees. In a ceremony in San Diego, Calif., on Oct. 8, John Henshaw, the assistant secretary of labor in charge of OSHA, presented the Western New York Federal Safety and Health Council with the Superior Performance Award, for its accomplishments in 2001. The Buffalo-based group has earned this honor, OSHA's highest, for 11 consecutive years. "Federal Safety and Health Councils throughout the country are important partners in our efforts to keep workers safe and healthy," said Henshaw. "The Western New York Federal Safety and Health Council represents the best in service, commitment and performance. We are pleased to honor them and proud to have them as our partners in the effort to reduce injuries, illnesses and fatalities in the workplace." Federal Safety and Health Councils serve as clearinghouses for data on occupational injuries and illnesses, provide technical advice and information on safety and health to the representatives of their agencies, and offer a forum for the local exchange of information and concerns to help safety and health representatives carry out their duties. Keith Hall, Chairperson of the Western New York Council who accepted the award from Assistant Secretary Henshaw, said the organization covers a ten-county area that encompasses more than 15,000 federal, state, county and municipal employees. During 2001, the council held quarterly meetings in which as many as 65 safety and health representatives received briefings on such topics as automated external defibrillator=s (AED), domestic violence in the workplace, construction and home safety, stress management, and weapons of mass destruction domestic preparedness. In addition to representatives of federal and other governmental employers, Federal Safety and Health Councils also welcome participation by employers in the private sector and labor unions.
