Delta Air Lines and DAL Global Services in Colorado Springs Recognized by U.S. Labor Department for Excellent Job Safety and Health
Companies Named VPP-Star Sites by OSHA

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recognized Delta Air Lines and its subsidiary DAL Global Services for their exemplary workplace safety and health program at a ceremony at the Colorado Springs airport on Jan. 26.

The two companies, who together provide passenger service operations at the Colorado Springs Airport, were designated as VPP "Star" sites, the highest level of recognition that OSHA's Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) offer. A VPP "Star" site maintains employee injury and illness rates below the national average for its industry and meets stringent safety and health program elements that far exceed regular OSHA standards. Delta and DAL Global Services are the only air transportation operators in Colorado to receive this prestigious recognition.

"This award acknowledges Delta Air Lines and DAL Global Services for their efforts to maintain employee safety and health programs that serve as shining examples for the airline industry and other workplaces," said Greg Baxter, OSHA regional administrator in Denver. "Safety performance is essential to the airline industry, and the Delta operations in Colorado Springs have successfully extended their safety focus to both passengers and their own employees."

Brad Baptiste, OSHA VPP manager in Denver, presented the VPP award to the worksite representatives at the ceremony. According to Baptiste, the Delta and DAL Global Services safety and health program has many aspects considered best practices. "The site has tremendous employee involvement systems highlighted by their behavior-based safety observation program, which authorizes every employee to intervene with any fellow employee or manager to address a safety concern," said Baptiste.

About 1,600 worksites throughout the U.S. have earned membership in the Voluntary Protection Programs, which offer employers a unique opportunity to move beyond traditional safety programs by recognizing participants that successfully incorporate comprehensive safety and health programs into their total management systems. VPP programs are open to deserving employers in any industry.

Requirements for application to the VPP include demonstrating a high degree of management support and employee involvement, a high-quality worksite hazard analysis, effective prevention and control programs and a comprehensive safety and health training program for all employees. Each of these elements must be effective and in operation for at least one year before applying to join the program.
