Alliance Targets Job Safety for Central Maine Medical Center Electrical Modernization

LEWISTON, Maine -- Safe and healthful working conditions for electricians and other workers modernizing Central Maine Medical Center's electrical system is the goal of a new alliance spearheaded by the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Joining with OSHA are the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local No. 567, the Maine Department of Labor's "Safety Works!" program and E.S. Boulos Company, the project's general and electrical contractor.

Alliance participants will develop and deliver training on construction safety and health issues, such as electrical, fall, caught in or between and struck-by hazards. Electricians and other workers on the project will be able to take OSHA's 10- and 30-hour construction safety and health courses.

"This alliance is an excellent opportunity to provide workers with knowledge and training to identify and prevent hazards now and in the future," said Anthony Lemire, OSHA's area director for Maine. "This training and information will serve them well on this and future jobs."

Participants will work together on projects that focus on construction safety and health and will be encouraged to take part in OSHA's cooperative programs, such as the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), safety consultation, and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP).

Signing the alliance were Lemire; Milton McBreairty, business manager of IBEW Local No. 567; Thomas Driscoll, executive director of the E.S. Boulos Company; and David E. Wacker, director of the Workplace Safety and Health Division of the Maine Department of Labor. A photograph of the signing is available by e-mailing fitzgerald.edmund@dol.gov.

OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with employers, trade associations and labor. OSHA has created more than 350 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
