Experts Will Help Employers Recognize Hazards and Prevent Accidents

AURORA, Ill. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today announced a forum for safety, health and wellness for small businesses in northern Illinois at Rock Valley Community College in Rockford on Wednesday, Oct. 29.

The forum is sponsored by OSHA; the Onsite Safety and Health Consultation Program of the Illinois Department of Commerce, the Stateline Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers; Rock Valley Community College; and Rock Valley Small Business Development Center. Safety and health professionals from the private sector and government will discuss accident investigations, workplace violence, electrical hazards, worker's compensation, and other safety topics.

"The Labor Department's goal is to do everything we can to help employers and workers prevent job injuries and illnesses by making their workplaces safer," said Michael G. Connors, OSHA's regional administrator in Chicago. "OSHA is committed to providing useful and timely assistance to help the small business community understand and comply with safety standards."

The forum will offer a special three-hour session on safety and health for the Spanish-speaking worker and a three-hour session on young workers. Employers may participate in a free wellness check-up that will include body fat analysis, blood pressure and total cholesterol.

The program will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. CDT at Rock Valley Community College, Stenstrom Center, 4151 Samuelson Road, Rockford, Ill.

The fee for the forum is $75, which includes lunch and refreshments. Advance registration is required. A registration form may be obtained by calling Rock Valley Community College's Small Business Development Center at 815-921-2071.

Co-sponsors include the Great Lakes Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health, Illinois Food Retailers Association, Illinois Safety Council, National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA-IBEW), National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), Northern Illinois Building Contractors (NIBCA), Northern Illinois University College of Engineering, and the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM).
