California Safety and Health Training Programs Funded by U. S. Department of Labor

SAN FRANCISCO -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has awarded more than $11.2 million to 67 nonprofit organizations, including three in California, for safety and health training and educational programs.

The Susan Harwood Training Grants support training programs that can be published and used by other organizations, training for OSHA's industry-specific ergonomic guidelines, and training for targeted safety and health hazards, including workplace violence and small-business safety and health management systems. Of the 67 grants funded, 50 are to new grantees selected through a national competition announced last May. The remaining 17 grants are one-year extensions of existing grants.

"This $11.2 million in grants will leverage the reach of training and education efforts to increase the health and safety of workers, " said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "These grants will also provide increased compliance assistance in a wide range of professions and disciplines - all of which will contribute to our mission to safeguard America's workers."

The State Building and Construction Trades Council of California, based in Sacramento, received $153,700. The council will conduct three 1-2 day train-the-trainer sessions, including one in Spanish, regarding noise and hearing conservation in construction. The council will host awareness seminars that address risk factors and focus on best practices and practical solutions.

Unstrung Bow Spiritual Retreat & Compassionate Mission Ministries, Inc., also known as the Relational Culture Institute, in Fresno, received $150,000. The organization will develop a workplace violence program in English and Spanish in a train-the-trainer format. The grantee will contract with University of California, Berkeley, for outreach and training. Training materials will be translated into Spanish.

University of California, Berkeley also received $206,250 to continue setting up a Young Worker Safety Resource Center as a national center for educational materials and information, with a focus on developing more comprehensive web-based information.

OSHA is dedicated to assuring worker safety and health. Safety and health add value to business, the workplace and life. For more information, visit www.osha.gov.
