Focal point on forklift safety, recordkeeping issues, lifting strain WASHINGTON -- The National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association (NLBMDA) today joined with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to help reduce workplace injuries and illnesses and advance overall workplace safety awareness. The Alliance signed today between NLBMDA and OSHA is geared to increasing overall safety awareness in the lumber and building materials industry, with a particular focus on preventing forklift accidents, and injuries sustained by lifting. "We commend this Association for emphasizing employee safety and safe work environments," said OSHA Administrator John Henshaw. "By aligning with us, NLBMDA brings extensive safety and health expertise to the table that will go a long way in ensuring workplace safety for the nearly half million workers they represent." "Providing a safe work environment has been a priority for our members and continues to be their focus today," added Shawn D. Conrad, President, NLBMDA. "Through our Alliance with OSHA, the industry will be better equipped to conduct safety programs that benefit both employees and employers. With this kind of cooperation we are confident that U.S. companies will make huge strides in moving from safety awareness to safety in practice." Key to the Alliance is the development of training and education programs and "tool box talks" on recordkeeping, forklifts and safe lifting targeted to the unique issues in the lumber and building material industry. OSHA and NLBMDA will also develop electronic assistance tools for OSHA's website that address safety and health hazards in the industry. NLBMDA and OSHA will develop and disseminate information on these topics by speaking or exhibiting at industry conferences, local meetings, and through various media, including their respective websites. OSHA is also encouraging Association members to build relationships with the agency's Regional and Area Offices to address forklift and lifting issues. Finally, both organizations will work together in convening or participating in forums, roundtable discussions, or stakeholder meetings on forklift and lifting issues in the industry in order to develop innovative and practical solutions for inclusion in industry specific safety and health programs. OSHA also wants to encourage NLBMDA members to participate in the agency's cooperative programs including the Voluntary Protection Programs, and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program. NLBMDA represents about 6,000 primarily independent lumber and building material companies, in addition to 32 manufacturers and service providers to the building material industry. A majority of the Association's members focus on the building sector and work with home building and professional contractors. OSHA is dedicated to assuring worker safety and health.
