Minimizing Exposure to Shipyard Safety and Health Hazards is focus of Alliance WASHINGTON -- The American Shipbuilding Association (ASA) is adding its name to the growing list of organizations wanting to work with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to advance worker safety and health. An Alliance formalized today during a signing ceremony at the Northrop Grumman-Ship Systems Ingalls Operations in Pascagoula, MS, sets in motion a cooperative relationship with OSHA to help protect shipyard workers by minimizing or eliminating exposure to shipyard safety and health hazards. "Shipbuilding and repair is one of the high-hazard industries in which we're focusing our efforts to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses," said OSHA Administrator John Henshaw. "Our Alliance with ASA is an important relationship that will help lower the injury and illness rates in the industry." "This Alliance reflects the steadfast commitment of the shipbuilding industry to continue its on-going effort to work in concert with OSHA in order to reduce injuries and illness associated with the unique workplace environment of a shipyard," added Cynthia L. Brown, President of ASA. "The Alliance also symbolizes the desire of ASA and its member shipyards to build upon the accomplishments that have been achieved through the proactive and far-sighted activities of the Maritime Advisory Committee for Occupational Safety and Health (MACOSH). The safety and health of all shipbuilding employees are of paramount importance, and this Alliance fosters and supports this belief." OSHA and ASA will provide ASA's members and others throughout the shipbuilding industry with information on developing safety and health programs. The Alliance calls for the development and dissemination of injury and hazard information at conferences, events and through print and electronic media, including both organizations' websites. OSHA staff will receive familiarization on the shipbuilding industry's safety and health best practices. An additional feature of the Alliance will be the sharing of current injury, hazard and workforce trends to help identify top priorities for developing successful safety and health training and outreach programs for the industry. Two other maritime Alliance program participants - the Shipbuilders Council of America and the National Shipbuilding Research Program - will work with ASA and OSHA to finish development of an electronic assistance tool for the maritime industry on OSHA's website that will address specific shipbuilding safety and health hazards. ASA is the national trade association that represents America's major shipbuilders. Collectively, ASA member shipyards employ more than 90 per cent of all workers engaged in ship construction in the United States. OSHA is dedicated to assuring worker safety and health.
