Cancer Genetics Network (CGN)

Description:
This national network specializes in the study of inherited predisposition to cancer and related translational research. The aim is to support collaborative investigations into the genetic basis of cancer susceptibility; explore mechanisms to integrate this new knowledge into medical practice; and identify means of addressing the associated behavioral, ethical and public health issues. The CGN's interests include:

  • Gene discovery
  • Gene characterization
  • Gene-environment interaction
  • Translational research
  • Behavioral research

Availability:
For approved studies, the CGN can offer a variety of services for a fee(s): collect 4-generation cancer family history pedigrees from enrollees, their families, and other individuals; assemble information for and complete medical extraction forms; obtain pathology reports and tumor blocks for molecular testing or to verify diagnosis; collect biospecimens with desired medical and demographic information; ship or store biospecimens; conduct telephone interviews with enrollees; recruit patients from high-risk clinics and tumor registries; provide genetic counseling; contact enrollees' treating physicians prior to enrollment; develop software including computerized follow-up for the study; use multiple software systems for breast cancer risk assessment.

Specialized expertise is available in certain areas, including in biostatistics, statistical genetics, epidemiology, genetic epidemiology, and behavioral research. CGN principal investigators also welcome opportunities to collaborate with research groups on important studies. They have experience in basic, clinical, and epidemiologic genetic research, and have established a track record of CGN collaborations with outside researchers.

Cost:
Investigators are expected to develop their own research funding in consultation with CGN.
