Corporate Collaborations

Here are several examples of recent collaborations between the Corporation and corporate sponsors.

The Best Buy/Best Buy Children’s Foundation has been a supporter of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service since 2002. The funds that Best Buy donates are used to encourage, educate, and mobilize students in kindergarten through high school as part of the Learn and Serve America program.

All Americans are encouraged to make Martin Luther King Day a day of community service. With Best Buy’s resources, children are able to participate in projects designed to bring people together around the common focus of service to others, as well as supporting AmeriCorps*NCCC to organize a service project in Washington, D.C.

The goals of the day of service include disseminating Dr. King’s philosophy by providing direct service, nonviolence training, education and programs ensuring the continuance of his work. These are projects that will help communities meet education, public safety, environmental and other human needs through direct service and effective citizen action.

The Home Depot Foundation came to the rescue when four hurricanes struck the southeastern United States in 2004, and responded with a gift of $500,000 to the Corporation for National and Community Service. This generous gift helps leverage the national and community service network to assist those in need by supporting long-term hurricane-rebuilding efforts.

The Corporation used the funds to make grants to nonprofit groups that are working to rebuild community facilities such as schools, senior citizen centers, and community and youth centers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, and South Carolina. The funds, which were administered in coordination with the various State Service Commissions, supported nonprofit groups that are working to mobilize community volunteers to assist in long-term rebuilding efforts. The Home Depot has also worked closely with the Corporation in playground builds and other service projects.

The UPS Foundation joined the Corporation in funding a landmark study on volunteer management capacity as part of its efforts to assist these groups in recruiting, training and managing volunteers, The study demonstrated that there is significant opportunity for increased funding for nonprofit capacity-building, which leads to improved program and service delivery. The UPS Foundation also provided seed support for the Fund for the Advancement of Effective Volunteer Resources Management, which will support sector-wide volunteer management priorities.

General Electric is committed to improving the communities in which the corporation has a major presence of employees and operations. Since 1995, the General Electric Fund has invested close to $1 million in over 40 matching grants to community projects in a unique collaboration with the Corporation and United Way of America. Local GE and United Way leaders select programs for funding in which the concentrated service of AmeriCorps members and their community volunteer partners can generate results.

As a result of GE's investment and the $2.5 million in public resources through AmeriCorps, members and other community volunteers have provided health care and meals for homeless families; renovated housing for low-income residents; taught conflict resolution and substance abuse prevention classes to at-risk students; and built new bridges between community and law enforcement officials. Through the collaboration, the General Electric Fund makes a high quality investment in communities. The United Way receives resources devoted to the community, including the intense efforts of full-time national service participants. Both GE and United Way have increased service opportunities for their volunteers. AmeriCorps members are able to extend and improve their service and impact through the leadership, expertise, and human resources provided by the partners.
