How to Use This Site

  • If you know the wilderness area you would like to research, jump right to that area’s page by clicking the Wilderness Areas tab on the home page and selecting the wilderness by name.
  • If you only know the general area (for example, the east side of the Sierras or somewhere near Tahoe), use the interactive map on the Wilderness Areas page to find designated wilderness areas in the region you’d like to visit. Stay tuned for listings by region as the SierraNevadaWild site develops.
  • If you are simply looking for general help planning any wilderness trip, use the Trip Planning tab on the home page to research everything from fire regulations to wilderness permits.
  • What is Designated Wilderness anyway? For more information on the history, philosophy, and laws behind California’s wilderness, click on the What is Wilderness tab and find the answer to all your wilderness questions.
  • For updated news about Sierra wilderness, check the News section (with excerpts on the home page). Also check out the Blog section for “from the horse’s mouth” field reports about wilderness issues and backcountry adventures.

About Us

SierraNevadaWild.gov is the brainchild of the Sierra Nevada Wilderness Education Project, a joint effort of the Forest Service, the National Park Service, and the Bureau of Land Management. These agencies are responsible for managing the 28 individual wilderness areas along the “spine” of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

Our goals are to:

  • Provide a centralized reliable source for current information and recent news about the 28 designated Wilderness areas in the Sierra Nevada
  • Help people plan their next wilderness visit, from brainstorming ideas through leaving the trailhead with everything you’ll need for a safe, enjoyable, responsible trip
  • Explain how California’s wilderness areas are managed and clarify the many policies set in place by the four agencies who protect these areas
  • Feature new (and old) wilderness resources and educational opportunities to encourage the enjoyment and protection of California’s wild places
  • Inspire people to experience the Sierra’s wilderness areas
