Fourth Annual NIH Director's Pioneer Award Symposium

Symposium
You are invited to attend the fourth annual NIH Director's Pioneer Award Symposium on September 22-23, 2008. The event will feature a keynote address by NIH Director Dr. Elias A. Zerhouni plus research talks by the 2007 Pioneer Award recipients ( http://nihroadmap.nih.gov/pioneer/Recipients07.aspx ), poster sessions by Pioneer and New Innovator Award recipients and members of their labs, roundtable discussions on highly innovative research, and announcement of the 2008 Pioneer awardees.

The NIH Director's Pioneer and New Innovator Award programs - key components of the NIH Roadmap for Medical Research - support exceptionally creative scientists who take highly innovative, and potentially transformative, approaches to major challenges in biomedical or behavioral research.

The symposium, in the Natcher Conference Center (Building 45) on the NIH campus, begins at 8:30 a.m. each day. An agenda is posted at http://nihroadmap.nih.gov/pioneer/symposium2008 .

Attendance is free and no registration is required. The event will also be videocast live and archived at NIH Videocasting .

Elaine Ostrander, Ph.D.
The NIH Director's Wednesday Afternoon Lectures Series (WALS) comprises weekly scientific talks by some of the world's top researchers in the biomedical sciences. All lectures are held in the Jack Masur Auditorium in Building 10 on the NIH main campus from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., unless otherwise noted, and are open to the public.

Lectures are viewable live on the web and also on videotape at the NIH Library, Bldg. 10, approximately one week after the lecture date. The WALS is captioned for the web; you may request sign language or a monitor with the captions in Masur auditorium. Conference

NCMHD, with the support of its NIH Institute/Center partners, is convening the first NIH Research Summit on The Science of Eliminating Health Disparities to:

  • Showcase the collective contribution of the NIH in the development of new knowledge in the Science of Eliminating Health Disparities
  • Highlight the progress of the NIH minority health and health disparities research activities to improve prevention, diagnostic, and treatment methods
  • Increase awareness and understanding of disparities in health
  • Showcase best-practice models in research, capacity-building, outreach, and integrated strategies to find solutions to health disparities
  • Provide an exciting forum for participants to learn and network with the nations multidisciplinary health disparities experts
  • Identify gaps in health disparities research Allow participants to make recommendations that will shape
  • the NIH health disparities strategic plan
  • Establish a framework for ongoing dialogue and creation of innovative and unique partnerships to address disparities in health in all affected communities
