Abstract

The Arc of the United States, formerly Association for Retarded Citizens, founded in 1950, is a national organization of volunteers, parents, educators, and professionals devoted to improving the welfare of people with mental retardation. It has 140,000 members in over 1,100 local chapters. The Arc publishes a variety of informative and educational pamphlets, guides, and brochures, as well as a newspaper. The Arc attempts to inform the public about prevention of mental retardation while making people aware of the needs and potentials of people with mental retardation. Research is encouraged on educational models and prevention. Progressive legislation is promoted. Employment opportunities and improved residential housing services are developed by The Arc of the United States, and counseling and guidance are provided by many chapters.

Publications

The Arc's publications list includes general information brochures, child development and family support booklets, listings and guides to community organizations, educational booklets, research reports, and guides to vocational rehabilitation, residential services, and employment information. Serial publications: The Arc inSight (newsletter), four issues per year--articles discussing residential services, government activities, model programs, human interest stories; Government Report (newsletter), twice monthly--reviews and analysis of legislation that affects citizens with mental retardation.
