Carbon Cycle Science & Technology Group

The Carbon Cycle Science & Technology Group aims to increase understanding of the effects of global change on the carbon cycle. The group builds and operates Free Air Carbon dioxide Enrichment (FACE) facilities that enable scientists to study the effects of global change in the field, under fully open-air conditions. Our scientists use these unique facilities to increase mechanistic understanding of how plants and ecosystems respond to global change.

Above ground, knowledge of the response of ecosystems to global change is advanced but below ground many fundamental questions remain unanswered because of the technical difficulties of conducting sub-surface measurements. Using both field studies and a soil analysis facility we are currently developing and testing new technologies that will enable the in situ, non-invasive measurement of soil carbon content.

The work of the CCS&T group is funded by the Department of Energy’s, Office of Science programs for Terrestrial Carbon Processes, Carbon Sequestration and the Program for Ecosystem Research and the Office of Fossil Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory.  The research of the CCS&T group contributes directly to the strategic plan of the U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program which is closely coordinated with the Interagency Carbon Cycle Research Program.
