Southwestern Ireland as seen from the International Space Station
Southwestern Ireland as seen from the International Space Station

high resolution 1000 pixel-wide image (2.4 MB JPEG)

Southwestern Ireland is a popular tourist destination with scenic views of countryside and cliffs and a rich Celtic history. This broad view from the International Space Station shows the relationship between valleys, mountains, and the major towns. Near Killarney are ancient oak and yew forests. The Blarney Stone can be kissed in Blarney Castle, just north of Cork.

The International Space Station Program supports the laboratory to help astronauts take pictures of Earth that will be of the greatest value to scientists and the public, and to make those images freely available on the Internet. Additional images taken by astronauts and cosmonauts can be viewed at the NASA/JSC Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth.
