Preserve America Community:
Milam County, Texas

Milam County (population 24,238) was organized in 1836 as one of the original 23 counties of Texas. While it originally encompassed one-sixth of the State, by 1861 it was reduced to its present boundaries. The county is predominantly rural with two cities: the county seat, Cameron, and Rockdale.

The Milam County Historical Commission is the countywide preservation organization and has been involved for the past eight years in restoration of the Renaissance Revival-style Milam County Courthouse (1892), a $3.794 million project. Across the street is the Milam County Historical Jail Museum (1895).

Another prominent preservation project in the county is restoration of the Rockdale Train Depot (1906) as a museum. The building reflects not only Rockdale's beginnings as a railroad town, but the overall importance of the railroads to the county's history. Visitors to these and other historic sites can stay in several recently rehabilitated bed and breakfast establishments.

Milam County promotes heritage tourism through participation in the initiatives of the Texas Historical Commission's Texas Brazos Trail Region.
