Preserve America Community:
Newport, Kentucky

Newport (population 17,048) was established in 1795, and its wealth of historic resources is reflected in its four historic districts listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

One of the community's most significant preservation projects was the rehabilitation of the historic Louisville and Nashville Bridge (1897) and its conversion to a pedestrian bridge. Fondly known as the Purple People Bridge because of its color, the bridge links the riverfronts of Newport and Cincinnati, Ohio, and has encouraged a whole new level of visitor and resident interaction between the two communities.

Newport is also proud of its annual historic homes tour in the locally designated East Row Historic District. Local fifth-grade students tour the historic district as part of a four-day preservation program developed by the city.
